“For what you see and hear depends a good deal on where you’re standing: it also depends on what sort of person you are.”

~C.S. Lewis

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”

~Stephen R. Covey

I witness it daily and perhaps you do as well, and sadly, I also know I am guilty of doing this very thing sometimes. When we listen only to reply, it shows that we are perhaps bored, uninterested and disengaged. Quite frankly, it’s disrespectful.

I know we are all in a rush and we don’t always have the time for in depth conversations, but by fully engaging and truly listening, we not only show the other person they are valuable and worthy of our time (even if only for 30 seconds), we may just pick up on a clue that they are asking for help or that they may have a phenomenal idea. Or better yet, we may just learn something for ourselves and about ourselves!

The challenge this week is to actively listen to at least three people and learn three new things! Do you accept?
