This morning, I sat in a diner while waiting for my son to complete a final. There were people of all ages and walks of life. You can’t help but overhear their conversations and it’s an intriguing open window; a brief glimpse into their lives.
There were clearly the regulars, the “Norms” of the diner circuit! The people who get a hello from not only the wait staff but shoutouts from the kitchen also. There were longtime friends, students, & professionals. There was a man meeting with his sponsor and there were people eating alone.
I observed smiles, sadness, laughter and pain in the 40 minutes I enjoyed my coffee and a spinach/mushroom omelette. It was a cacophony but I could pinpoint something in each conversation.
It’s amazing what you can learn about our brothers and sisters when you just stop and listen (intentionally or inadvertently). You feel both their joys and pains without ever even directly speaking with them.
Takeaways: listen, smile, acknowledge, and say a prayer or two. Prayers of gratitude for their joys; prayers of healing, wisdom and patience for their struggles. Prayers for peace for all!
Take a few moments each day to focus on those around you. Imagine the positive energy we could create if we took a moment to pray or send positive vibes each day for each person we see!
