”Make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.” ~Jon Krakauer Into the Wild
Every day is a new sun; everyday a new adventure. This is a great mantra to add to the mix. Wouldn’t this be a great way to think and live? Absolutely—count me in! I’m tired of living in the comfort zone and doing every little thing because it’s safe. Certainly, I still have a child at home for a few more years, so yes, responsibilities and security take center stage right in the moment.
Knowing that I will have more freedoms, I have already begun making lists of the things I want to do, try, and visit. Spontaneity and adventure will return! Perhaps you are looking forward to this as well. There is, however, one thing we need to do first: Let Go of Our Fears!
Our fears establish the limits of our life and I know we were not put on this life to live with its confines.
”The key to change…is to let go of fear.” ~ Roseanne Cash
”It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.” ~ Marcus Aurelius
”In order to be free, we must learn to let go. Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain the old pain.” ~ Mary Manin Morrissey
The next few articles will discuss how we can work to let go of our self-created fears. See Self-Created Fears Suck if you haven’t read this post yet.
As Chris Butler says, “Today’s a perfect day for a whole new start. Let go of fear and free your mind. It’s time to open your heart.”
Are you ready for a radical change?
